The Quarry Golf Course

Designed by nationally recognized golf course designer Keith Foster, The Quarry is recognized around the country for it’s unique setting and design. At the Quarry Golf Course in San Antonio you will be challenged and rewarded in many ways. The front nine plays in a links style format and features rolling hills, native grasses, and immaculate greens. The back nine lays out in an 100 year old quarry pit. With elevated tee boxes and shots that will fly over large expanses you will definitely love it. After a day at the Quarry Golf Course in San Antonio, you will certainly feel like you just played one the most unique and enjoyable rounds of golf in your life.

The Quarry Golf Course is definitely unique in San Antonio and located a short 5 minute drive from downtown it doesn’t get much more convenient.

The pro shop is well equipped to supply you with whatever you may need for your day on the course. The restaurant is one of the best course dining facilities in town. The food and atmosphere are very good and the View from the dining area is Awesome. It overlooks the back 9 that sits down in the quarry pit. Truly unique.

The practice facilities at the quarry are about as good as they get in San Antonio. (see our full review here). The range is well kept and the turf is good, the practice green is excellent and gives a true representation of the courses greens and the short game area is small but top notch.

The course reminds me alot of links golf. There is barely a tree on the course. The rough is treacherous, consisting of tall whispery grasses that make it impossible to find your ball. (Just save the time and drop a new one :) ) The front 9 is tight but the fairways are wide, with lots of twists and turns. If your going to miss the fairway miss big, so you can be in the next fairway over, less than big your in the tall stuff that separates the fairways. The back 9 puts you down in the quarry itself. (Beware in the summer that the pit will be at least 10 degrees warmer than the street level) There are some interesting holes in the pit that should be pointed out. My 2 favorite are the back to back combo of 16 and 17. Number 16 is a up hill par 3, 242 yards long. Luckily there is very rarely any wind in the pit so what you see is what you get, but it’s a tough hole to say the least. Number 16 is followed up with the short par 4 number 17. At 386 yards long, as the fairway lies, your drive is across the ravine and depending on your carry you could drive the green or you have to choose how much to shave off so your driver will land up top. My partner and I were on this green one day a few years ago and were putting out and all of a sudden a ball it the trees on the quarry wall next to green, we were like what was that. Then a minute later another ball hits the bunker in front of the green, only thing is no one is in the fairway. As we shortly found out the former Texas long drive champ was right behind us blasting it at the green for about a 360 carry,

The course is always in excellent condition and the greens are about as good as they get for a public course.

The only real problem with The Quarry in our opinion is the cost. With a $90 dollar weekend rate, it keeps most of the locals away. But they have heard our calls and moved twilight to 12pm everyday and the rate is only $39, so get your sunscreen out and be prepared for “The Pit” at the hottest part of the day.

Quarry is a very nice scenic course. I can’t however justify the cost of $90 for a weekend round. This is a great winter course, as there is not a lick of shade to protect you from the sun.

Two different courses between front and back nines. Front nine is a links style with water and rolling fairways, where the back nine is played in an old rock quarry. Its a wonderful course, but it can be pricey, with the best time to play is after 2 on the weekends.

This course by far the best links-style course I have ever played! The fact that the back nine actually play inside of the massive quarry is pretty amazing. It’s a daunting course, but it’s definitely playable for the hack golfer. The course and grounds were meticulously cured, and in excellent playing condition. The only bad thing is a $85 green fee, which is to be expected from a course of this caliber, but I’m sure there are better values out there. Recommended.

Nice course, but not worth the price. The front nine is somewhat of a links style, which provides no shade in the hot August sun. The back 9 is in an old quarry which looks amazing from the club house. However, once you get inside “the pit” it’s like 10 degrees hotter with no air circulation at all. The layout’s not bad, but this is more of a novelty course. The charge is for the novelty, not the course. I’ll play again……..in the winter. The location is good from downtown.

Have played Quarry Golf Course only two times in 5 years as a resident. An okay course but overpriced and overrated for what you get. Several other golf courses are just as challenging, just as enjoyable, and just as beautiful, and at better value.

At $125/person, I expected much more from this course. The front side is a glorified pitch and putt. And next to 281 and a neighborhood. The back side is a bit tougher, with the last 3 holes being pretty good tests. For your money, go to Canyon Springs or Silverhorn, eat lunch, and buy a sleeve of balls.

Its a good course, very challenging to me. But it is a little rich for my blood. But every once in a while I get to play it. So unless you are an avid golfer, plan on being a little frustrated.

With vistas and color galor, this course will keep you coming back. The course is great for women because of the nice advantages given, and the fact that the ball must be kept on the fairway. A warning to all you long hitting men, “bring lots of balls.” The grasses are tall, and the rough is thick, so be prepared for a challenge. It is open to the public with a country club atmosphere. The grounds are immaculate. Ask the proshop about specials, especially for San Antonio residents.

I’ve played golf all over, but I’ve yet to have as memorable a time as I had playing The Quarry. EVERY hole is an experience; it’s sometimes hard to keep focused because of the layout… especially on the back nine. It was amazing that, on one of the doglegs, you could look down and see hundreds of golf balls looking back up and you; it was like playing on a course that had tons of lakes, but they were empty! (Also, you can’t mishit and “skip” a ball across a ravine!)

I was there in ‘96 (for an FCA function), and I’ve NEVER forgotten it!
It’s still top on my list as “the most memorable course” I’ve played.

One note: Do NOT go looking for your ball if it’s out of the fairway.
As one of the rangers told me, “Son, that’s the Discovery Channel out there!”

Visited San Antonio, and was lucky enough to find some time to play THE QUARRY COURSE. What a wonderful course. Even though the day I visited was cold and cloudy, the course made up for it. The front 9 feels more wide open, and has some very interesting shots. The back nine goes into an old rock quarry, and the views are amazing. This is a great shotmakers course. You have to place your ball in the right spots in the fairway for optimal shots to the green. Watch out for the false front on the green at the 9th. I chipped up to the cup, only to have my ball roll back, and past me down the fairway. All in all a wonderful test of golf. Recommended to all golfers from novice to scratch golfers.

When the “pros” in the pro shop weren’t ignoring me, they were rude. Despite the crowded status on the first tee, the starter didn’t “advise” any twosomes to join together. This resulted in very slow play–2.5 hours for nine holes!! To make matters worse, there weren’t any marshalls on patrol to take note of the slow play and get things moving. Making the situation worse was the condition of the course itself. The greens had recently been aerated and sanded, which is fine, but it would have been nice to know, especially since I called ahead and specifically asked. I also asked if a tee time was needed and the “pro” said I didn’t need one. Upon arrival, the line at the tee box was 5 groups long. Stay away.

A big disappointment! To pay $117 to play behind a golf tournament on a Saturday is ridiculous! The greens were probably top-dressed a few weeks ago and were bumpy. The back nine had so many areas under repair on the fairways you couldn’t help but feel like you were playing into sand traps in the middle of the fairways! Slow play was the rule – 5 hours of anguish! I won’t be back!

We were on vacation from Houston and were waiting until the rain died down to play 18 holes. We saw the sun came out and drove qucikly over to the course and arrived at 6:02. The pro shop informed us that the cut off was 6:00-give me a break,. Then a guy that had been in the bar drinking came by the pro shop and begged to play 2 more holes and the guy behing the desk said OK. When we left we saw alot of people still in carts playing. The sun doesn’t go down until almost 9:00 in Texas, clearly enough time to get 18 holes in. I guess they didn’t need the business?

The young guys that get your clubs at the bag drop and clean them after seemed very nice and friendly and helpful!

Four of us played the Quarry on July 15 and it was really great. We played in the morning so we avoided the afternoon South Texas heat. The front nine was really fun but the back nine was something I had never experienced before. Really a great experience to play. Very, very green in a pretty dry year here in Texas. They told us that they water with recycled city water so they are not restricted in any way. I look forward to playing it again soon.

What a great experience!! New to the area, but I have never seen a course like this! The course was in wonderful shape, completely over seeded, and the staff was friendly, and knowledgable! Will defintely be back! It looks like the restaurant has been totally re- done as well…great food and view.
